Tips: Why is 60 Hertz selected for the United States?

Westinghouse, which possesses the strengths in manufacturing and operation AC power supply technology, promotes the higher frequency standard of 60Hz after 1890(frequency standard compared with 25Hz low-frequency AC), which is used till now in the United States. In 1920, the America Federal Government established the electric power investigation meeting, recommending 60 Hz as the standard frequency of the United States.

In 1893, the American GE company planed to adopt 50 Hz to some power supply systems in California according to the frequency standard of Edison system. However, because of the competitive pressure, it eventually yielded to the 60Hz standard of Westinghouse. The American technicians at that time believed that, 60Hz is superior to the 50Hz generally adopted in European countries. The generator of 60Hz has smaller size and the conversion efficiency of the transformer is high.
