Tips: What is a soft starter?
A soft starter is an electronic motor control device designed to gradually accelerate an AC induction motor to its full speed by controlling the voltage applied to it during the startup phase. Instead of applying full line voltage instantly—which causes a high inrush current and sudden torque—a soft starter uses a series of thyristors (SCRs) to ramp up the voltage smoothly over a preset time. This process significantly reduces the inrush current (typically to 2-4 times the full-load current) and minimizes mechanical stress on the motor, shaft, and connected machinery, such as belts, gears, or pumps. Once the motor reaches full speed, an internal bypass contactor energizes, allowing current to flow directly to the motor, thus improving the efficiency and thermal performance of the soft starter during steady-state operation. Its primary benefits include protecting equipment from wear and tear, preventing water hammer in pumping systems, and mitigating voltage dips in the electrical supply.
