Tips: How does a residual current circuit breaker work?

A residual current circuit breaker (RCCB) is a safety device designed to prevent electric shocks by quickly breaking the circuit when it detects a leakage of current. It operates by monitoring the current flow through the live (phase) and neutral wires. In normal operation, the current in both wires is equal. However, if there's a fault, such as a person accidentally touching a live wire, some current leaks to the ground, creating an imbalance.

The RCCB detects this imbalance via a differential transformer. When the difference exceeds a set threshold (typically 30mA for household devices), the RCCB instantly trips and cuts off the electricity supply. This prevents dangerous electric shocks or potential fires caused by earth faults.

RCCBs are particularly effective in protecting against earth faults and can enhance the overall safety of electrical installations by ensuring a quick response to hazardous situations.
