A domestic 2000 Watt hydro turbine generator typically doesn't require a large dam, but a low weir or small dam is generally required. Its primary function is to slightly raise the water level, creating the slight head required for power generation and providing a stable water diversion. Run-of-the-river design has a minimal environmental impact, as water flows back downstream. However, establishing such a facility may require consultation with and obtaining permission from local water authorities.
