An electric vehicle controller is an electronic component that runs between the battery and the motor to control the speed and acceleration of the electric vehicle, much like a carburetor in a gasoline-powered vehicle. The controller converts the DC power from the battery to AC power (for AC motors only) and regulates the flow of energy from the battery. Unlike a carburetor, the controller also reverses the rotation of the motor (so the vehicle can be put in reverse) and converts the motor to a generator (so that the kinetic energy of motion can be used to charge the battery when braking is applied).
